What is smooth sandstone paving and what are its characteristics?
Smooth sandstone paving is natural sandstone block that has been machine sawn to achieve nominally consistent size and thickness, then lightly honed on the surface to create a smoother and more contemporary finish, commonly referred to as sawn and honed sandstone. The underside is typically sawn flat to help maintain thickness consistency and make installation easier. As a natural material, it will show colour variation, veining and tonal differences, and will appear darker when wet and lighter when dry, which are normal characteristics rather than defects.
How should smooth sandstone paving be installed?
Smooth sandstone should always be installed on a full mortar bed rather than spot bedding to ensure long term stability. A joint width of 5–8 mm is recommended to accommodate natural tolerances, and applying a priming slurry such as SBR to the underside is strongly advised to improve bonding and reduce interaction between the cement base and the stone.
What thickness is suitable for smooth sandstone paving?
For most domestic patios and garden use, a thickness of around 20 mm is generally suitable when installed on a full mortar bed, providing a practical balance between strength and ease of handling. Slight variations in thickness may occur during production due to natural stone processing, but these are typically within acceptable industry tolerances and do not affect normal use.
From an expert packing and logistics perspective, for 900 x 600 x 20 mm smooth sandstone slabs, 32 slabs per pallet is considered optimal. For 600 x 600 x 20 mm slabs, approximately 48 slabs per pallet is recommended. For mixed-size patio packs (four-size project packs), around 57 slabs per pallet is generally advised. These figures are based on practical industry experience and are intended to balance pallet weight, handling safety and transport efficiency.
UK pallet networks typically offer more economical rates for pallets under 1000 kg, and exceeding this limit may incur surcharges. Overpacking may result in excess weight, and in some cases may lead to reduced slab thickness in order to meet delivery and transport standards.
⚠️ Paving Slabs UK Expert Advice (Important: Must Read Before Purchase)
Smooth sandstone is relatively porous and water staining can be more noticeable on its honed surface. For this reason, sealing is strongly recommended, although not mandatory, as it helps reduce staining, enhance appearance and maintain a fresher and more consistent finish. Reapplication is typically advised every 2 years depending on use and exposure.
For best results, apply a breathable stone sealer to the top and sides and ensure proper priming during installation to minimise moisture interaction. Due to sawn edges, minor chipping may occasionally occur, which is a normal characteristic of paving grade natural stone and should be expected in practical use rather than treated as a defect.
Before purchasing, it is important to fully understand that smooth sandstone is a natural paving material intended for outdoor ground use, not a decorative or furniture-grade product. Variations in colour, minor imperfections and small edge chips are inherent to the material and are not valid grounds for claims. Customers who require highly uniform appearance or near-perfect finishes should carefully consider their expectations before purchase.
